The Guild of Designers & Artists- Designers’ Meet- 25th Feb 2013

The Guild of Designers & Artists in its endeavor for knowledge sharing and creating a platform for young talents , organized a “Designer’s Meet” on 25th February 2013 at Hotel Crown Plaza today , New Delhi.

Ms. Lipika Sud, President – the Guild of Designers and Artists – welcomed the chief guest and other guests for the evening.

Ms. Lipika Sud in her introductory speech said “Public Art can truly revitalize both the social & public spaces and thus can create new landmarks of references throughout the city for us to understand our rich cultural heritage. It must create a dialogue between art, architecture and urban design making it a great learning experience for all.

In such a context, the Guild seeks a critical and positive engagement with different artists, designers, professionals and government representatives for the promotion of public art in the cities of India.

Are the Developers only creating structures? Is there synergy between the Developers, the Architects and the Interior Designers ?  Are the Consumer needs being fulfilled? Are we thinking “inside out”?

The emphasis is to create a broad understanding of the issues that implicate works of ‘public art’ within the current globalized milieu.

Even though there are policies like the central government allocating one percent of its infrastructure budget to public art, there is a gap between such policies and the modalities of implementing them.

The guild seeks to initiate public art projects through:

  1. Organizing seminars like this to create awareness for the need an importance of public art
  2. Survey sites and identify arts and crafts where such arts could be showcased
  3. Organize workshops where artisans, craftsmen, architects/ designers and students would come together and learn and create works of art. It will therefore have a lot of design intervention and also eventually help in market linkage.
  4. The whole process can be documented through films and photographs and shared with the public who can learn about the story behind each creation.

On a whole the “Role of the Guild” is to make the public understand, appreciate, incorporate and showcase the rich Indian Art & Crafts in public & private spaces which is also their one of the agendas.”
Ar. Rohit Raj Mehndiratta presented the above points and gave examples of Public Art in other countries and in India through a very interesting slide presentation and emphasized on the importance of Public Art in our country.
